Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a great martial art for self defernse. For one, Jiu-Jitsu doesn't rely on fancy "Power Ranger" hitting and striking techniques. Secondly, it's a very physical martial art, and your child will develop physically and mentally; however, it is not considered violent because there is no striking allowed in practice. BJJ is similar to judo and wrestling and focuses on grappling techniques. Grappling comes very naturally to children so it is fairly easy to learn. Jiu-jitsu techniques are NOT based on strength or athleticism, so it's the perfect martial art for all, especially smaller kids and girls. Jiu-Jitsu techniques are based on leverage, balance, momentum, and body positioning. As mentioned before: our child will develop tremendously. You will see big improvements in coordination, agility, flexibility and core strength. Through BJJ kids will also learn respect and have more self- control and self confidence, and less issues with anxiety and discipline. In addition, proper health and nutrition will be covered and reinforced. Muay Thai Kick Boxing (Thai Boxing): Muay Thai Kick Boxing is an excellent for those looking for a martial art that is similar to karate or taekwondo. Muay Thai teaches one how to use their hands, elbows, knees and legs for self defense. It is based on striking and complimentary to Jiu-Jitsu teachings. Unlike our Jiu-Jitsu program and other martial arts programs, a traditional martial arts uniform is not worn. Gym shorts and a T-shirt are general attire for this class. Boxing gloves are required. See pictures below. Discipline in Martial Arts: While the martial arts are good for teaching self-defense and helping a child develop, parents should not look to the martial arts for huge changes in a child's discipline if it's not being reinforced at home. First and foremost, parents with a child with discipline issues need to look at their own disciplinary techniques and other factors that may be going on in their home. It is the parents job to teach and discipline their children, not a martial arts instructor or their school principal. This can be said for health and nutrition as well. A healthy diet and proper nutrition is very important. One can not expect a child to make big improvements in weight loss and health, if they are still eating junk food at home and at school. Avoid These Foods: For starters, anything with: High Fructose Corn Syrup and Refined Sugars. This means sodas, Gatorade, Powerade, Vitamin Water, Monster drinks and most energy drinks that are filled with chemicals and synthetic ingredients. Candy, most commercial fruit juices (these are filled with sugar), chocolate milk and other colored milks. A great alternative is coconut water or just water. I also recommend Almond and Rice Milk and Coconut milk as milk alternatives, but regular organic milk is OK. For more info on food and nutrition I highly recommend this documentary: Food INC. Black Belts in Martial Arts: In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the black belt is a coveted rank and is reserved only for adults who show true skill against other skilled opponents. Black belts are not given to anyone under 19-years-old. In some other martial arts, awarding black belts to kids is a common practice--If you pay enough money you can probably get one even easier. If your sole goal is to have your child receive a black belt, then please consider another martial arts school.eiThe belt system for children (up to 15-years-old) is white, yellow, orange, green. There are 4 stripes at each level. Kids must be 16 years-old to receive a blue belt, which is after green. It will take most kids (10-years-old and up) 12 to 18 months to move from white to yellow belt. Younger children should expect even more time to move up to yellow belt. Youn
