About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
There is a lot of information about BJJ out in cyberspace, so we won't get into a lot of detail about it here. BJJ is similar to judo, but with more emphasis placed on groundfighting and submission techniques. Unlike other martial arts, such as Karate, Tae Kwan Do or Kung Fu, BJJ doesn't rely on using punches and kicks to overcome an attacker. Instead, Jiu-jitsu practitioners utilize leverage, technique and superior positioning to overcome an opponent/attacker with choke-holds and joint locks (submissions). In Jiu-Jitsu, strength and athleticism are not necessary components in overcoming bigger and stronger opponents. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist can submit an opponent while on his back just as easily as from the standing position. 95% of all real fights end up on the ground, the place where a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner is most effective, and where weight and strength advantages are more easily overcome.
If you are intrigued and ready to try BJJ, then please give us a call. We have kids and adult classes, and all levels are welcome to learn this amazing martial art. Jiu-Jitsu is for everybody: the young, the old, the small, the weak, the rich, the poor, the smart, the not-so-smart, will all truly discover who they are and what they are really made of when they practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu–Guaranteed!

The Best Gym for Street-Ready Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Self-Defense!
At Dojo Americana we teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu for self defense, MMA, sport/tournament and fitness. The majority of people looking to train jiu-jitsu are not practicing for competition. Nor do they want to be in classes where there's a lot of competive students. While competition is fun it's not for everyone. Many just want to learn jiu-jitsu for self defense and get a great workout. If this sounds like you then our Jiu-Jitsu self-defense program will be perfect for you. Classes are very structured and last 60-minutes. You will learn Jiu-Jitsu from the ground up in a timely fashion. This program is fashioned after the Gracie Combatives program and is designed for students to get the most out of their Jiu-Jitsu training and get you street-ready in as little time as possible.
Why Choose Dojo Americana for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!
We offer both sport and self defense Jiu-Jitsu programs; and our program integrates both wrestling takedowns and judo throwing techniques, which are very complimentary to the ground techniques of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. We believe takedowns If sport Jiu-jitsu is more your style then these classes will be better suited for you. In these classes you will learn the latest sport techniques along with the fundamentals. You will also learn takedowns and throwing techniques from wrestling and judo. Why? If you have ever been to a Jiu-Jitsu tournament you will see that most competitors look uncomfortable and clumsy at takedowns and throws. While that's OK for some, it's not OK for us at Dojo Americana. While jumping to guard on a matted surface is fine, in the street it's not something we recommend. We recognize the importance of takedowns and throws and believe this should be part of even a sport program. We want to ensure that all of our students are adept at all aspects of grappling.
What is the The Best Jiu-Jitsu Academy–For You?
Well the best academy for one person is not necessarily the best place for someone else. Everybody is different and are looking to train jiu-jitsu for different reasons. For someone who is 21-years-old and wants to compete is not the same as someone 35-years-old and wants to just learn to save his butt in a street situation. If you're serious about competition then you should be training 5 days a week anyway and 99.9% of the people out there aren't that serious about competing. The married person with more responsibilities, doesn't necessarily have the same time to put in that much training, nor to they have the desire to compete. At Dojo Americana we have both types of people; those who want to compete and those who just want to learn jiu-jitsu and enjoy themselves while also getting in better shape.
Will Training at a Gracie School make me Better?
Come on don't be silly! Training at a Gracie affiliated academy isn't going to make you better than someone training somewhere else. Our members have beaten guys from bigger and better known academies. Coaching by itself isn't going to make you a better competitor. Daily training and DESIRE is what is going to make you a better competitor. Knowing and training the basics everyday is going to make you better. Knowing 30 more techniques than the next guy isn't going to make you better unless you're better at the basics––In MMA there are purple belts beating black belts. It's not how much you know, it's how well you know what you know and knowing how to make it work when the tough gets tougher. A very small percentage will compete and even a smaller percentage will compete and win a major tournament. We practice the basics over and over.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Women(BJJ)
If anyone should be practicing BJJ it is women. The chances of a women ending up on the ground in an attack are even higher than if a man is attacked by another man. Do the math! If you're a woman the chances of you ending up on the ground are 99%. Karate and kickboxing isn't going to help you in this situation. This is when you need BJJ. In my experience, women learn quicker than guys. Guys let their ego get in the way and this inhibits their progressioniin the art.

At Dojo Americana most Jiu-Jitsu classes are taught with the gi (traditional uniform) which is worn because it represents clothing. No-gi jiu-jitsu is available–please see schedule. However, learning with the gi is highly recommended. Some of the best MMA fighters have reached the black belt level in Jiu-Jitsu by practicing Jiu-Jitsu with the gi. Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, BJ Penn, Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, Damian Maia, and GSP are just some of the top names in UFC who still practice Jiu-Jitsu with the gi.
A typical class at Dojo Americana includes various drills & exercises specific to the movements of jiu-jitsu for warm-ups and conditioning; takedown training is almost a regular regimen at Dojo Americana, however, ground techniques are the focus and what BJJ is known for; the last 15-30 minutes is dedicated to live training (AKA rolling) at a more realistic pace and intensity."
The Importance of Finding Credible BJJ Instruction...
It's importat to realize that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is different than MMA. Many MMA gyms offer submission grappling or wrestling only, which is not the same as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu is mainly practiced with the gi or kimono, which is the uniform worn by traditional Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. It's highly recommended that those wanting to learn the intricate details of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, find a black belt level instructor that teaches techniques utilizing the gi for the majority of training. The popularity of MMA has been good for Jiu-Jitsu, however, this has prompted many low-level instructors with little experience to start teaching at newly opened MMA gyms that are surfacing all around Southern California. Before joining a gym ask for the instructors credentials. Being an "MMA fighter" or a "wrestler" doesn't make a person a high-level Jiu-Jitsu instructor. There is a "big" difference.e
Learning proper Jiu-Jitsu first comes in finding a reputable academy and a black belt instructor with a credible and traceable linegae. It's important to realize that finding a good jiu-jitsu academy (gym) is vital if you want to learn the fine details, correct principles and the true philosophy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Beware of instructors who have no traceable lineage of instructors. They are out there. Credible black belt instructors do NOT learn their jiu-jitsu from You Tube videos.
Mark Hopkins is a certified black belt instructor under Professor Carlos Valente, whom is a 6th degree black belt under the legendary Rickson Gracie. Professor Mark Hopkins has been studying BJJ under Professor Valente since 1996 and earned his black belt in April 2006. He is a former judo practitioner and has been studying the grappling arts since 1986. He is also working toward becoming a Certified Gracie Combatives® Instructor.
